When the Body Speaks: The Deeper Message Behind Perimenopause Symptoms
You wake up tired even though you went to bed early.
Your shoulders ache.
Your patience has disappeared.
You suddenly cannot tolerate the person chewing loudly beside you.
Your jeans fit differently.
You forget why you walked into the kitchen.
And somewhere between the 3 a.m. wake-ups, the hot flashes, the joint pain and the feeling that you are no longer quite yourself, you start wondering:
What on earth is happening to me?
Of course, there are physical explanations.
Hormones are changing.
Sleep may be changing.
Recovery may be changing.
Your nervous system may be more reactive.
Your muscles, joints, digestion and mood may all feel different.
But sometimes there is another layer too.
Not a hidden mystical meaning behind every symptom.
Not a punishment.
Not a sign that you somehow caused your symptoms with the wrong thoughts.
Something much simpler:
Sometimes a changing body makes it harder to keep ignoring a life that no longer fits quite as well as it used to.
And that is the part I want to explore here.
🌿 The Body Is Not Just a Collection of Separate Parts
We are often encouraged to treat imbalance as if each body part goes wrong independently and simply needs to be fixed in isolation.
The shoulder is the shoulder. The gut is the gut. Sleep is sleep. Anxiety is “mental.” Thoughts supposedly affect nothing physical. Emotions belong somewhere else.
But that is not how a human being actually lives.
The body is one interconnected system living inside one life.
We are physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual beings, and these layers constantly influence one another.
So when a symptom becomes louder, it is worth asking not only:
“What is happening physically?”
but also:
“What else is happening in my life at the same time that has a similar quality?”
✦ A SIMPLE WAY TO THINK ABOUT IT
BODY
What is happening physically?
↓
PATTERN
When does it get better or worse?
↓
LIFE
What else is happening around it?
↓
CURIOSITY
Is there anything here asking for attention?
🌿 Your Everyday Reactions Are the Goldmine
You do not need to sit for hours trying to “figure yourself out.” Watch yourself during an ordinary day. That is where the patterns reveal themselves.
Notice what happens when someone is late, when your partner says something irritating, when work does not go to plan, when your body refuses to perform the way you expected, when somebody says no to you, or when life simply does not cooperate.
What happens next?
Do you tighten, rush, criticize, withdraw, blame, over-explain, become resentful, try to control the outcome, push harder, or pretend you are fine?
This is not about judging yourself. It is about learning to see yourself while you are living.
Your emotional habits do not stay neatly inside your head. Negativity, frustration, anger, fear, chronic resentment, and the need to control what cannot be controlled can shape how you experience stress, how well you rest, how you relate to others, and how much internal pressure you carry.
Your reactions are information.
They show you where you repeatedly get activated, what you struggle to accept, where you lose energy, and where there may be room for a different response.
That is your goldmine.
Not because every emotion causes illness, but because your everyday reactions reveal the patterns your body and mind are living with over and over again.
But because the way you repeatedly meet life influence the wellbeing of your body
🎒 Think of Perimenopause Like a Backpack
Imagine you have been carrying a backpack for twenty years.
Every year you add something.
Work.
Children.
Parents.
Relationships.
Expectations.
Financial pressure.
Responsibility.
Things you never said.
Things you never grieved.
And because you are capable, you keep carrying it.
Eventually, someone adds one tiny stone.
And you think:
“Why can’t I cope with this ONE thing?”
But it was never just the stone.
It was the backpack.
Perimenopause can sometimes feel like the stage when the straps finally start digging in.
✨ Perimenopause Symptoms & Their Deeper Messages
Do not rush to interpret the symptom. Notice the pattern around it.
Notice what was happening that day.
Notice the emotional tone.
Notice whether you were rushing, controlling, suppressing, overgiving, fighting reality, or carrying too much.
Notice what keeps happening again and again.
Over time, you may begin to see that the symptom and the larger life pattern share a similar quality.
That is not proof of cause.
It is useful information.
And useful information gives you somewhere to work.
🌙 Exhaustion / Deep Fatigue
Where have I been living beyond my actual capacity? What am I continually giving energy to without receiving enough back?
🌙 Sleep Disruption
What does my system struggle to put down? Where might I need more rhythm, decompression or genuine rest rather than simply collapsing at the end of the day?
🌿 Anxiety / Inner Agitation
What feels uncertain, overloaded or unsafe right now? Where might my life need more steadiness, containment or support?
🔥 Rage / Irritability
What am I no longer willing to tolerate? Where have I swallowed anger, overridden a boundary or made myself agreeable when I wasn’t?
🌑 Low Mood / Emotional Flatness
What has become depleted, disconnected or devoid of meaning? Is there something I am grieving — including an older version of myself or my life?
🌀 Loss of Motivation
Am I genuinely depleted, or am I trying to motivate myself toward something that no longer fits?
🌿 Joint Pain / Stiffness / Body Aches
Where does my life need more support, movement, flexibility or recovery? What changes when I stop treating my body as something that simply has to keep up?
🪶 Neck & Shoulder Tension
What am I physically and emotionally carrying? Where am I bracing, holding, managing or taking responsibility for too much?
🌿 Recurring Back / SI-Area Pain
Where might I need greater physical support and stability — and where does that same question of support show up elsewhere in my life?
🌺 Weight or Body-Composition Changes
Can I move from punishment and control toward curiosity? What would caring for this changing body look like if the goal were support rather than forcing it back into an old shape?
🔥 Hot Flashes / Surges of Heat
Where is there already too much intensity, pressure or stimulation in my life? What would creating more space or cooling down look like beyond the physical symptom itself?
💓 Heart Palpitations / Wired-but-Tired Feelings
What is overstimulating my system right now — physically, mentally or emotionally? Where might I need more space, steadiness or recovery?
🧠 Brain Fog / Forgetfulness
How much am I asking my brain to hold? What could be simplified, delegated, written down or allowed to matter less?
🌊 Sensory Overwhelm
Where has life become too loud, busy or demanding? What boundaries would create more space around my nervous system?
❤️ Loss of Libido / Diminished Desire
Is there enough energy, safety, pleasure and room for desire in my life? Or has everything become obligation, output and responsibility?
🌿 Digestive Changes / Bloating
What happens when I slow down enough to nourish myself properly? Where am I rushing, overstimulated or taking in more than I can comfortably process?
🌾 Dizziness / Feeling Ungrounded
What helps me feel physically and emotionally anchored? Where might I need more steadiness, nourishment, routine or support?
🪞 “I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore”
What if the task is not simply to retrieve the old you? What if an identity that once fit is beginning to loosen?
✦ Loss of Tolerance for People, Work or Situations
What have I been tolerating because it was easier than changing it? What becomes possible if I take my changing tolerance seriously?
🌿 SI Joint / Pelvic Instability / Recurring SI-Area Pain
Where has life moved out of balance? Are you carrying too much on one side — practically, emotionally or energetically? Where do you need more stability, support or a better balance between effort and recovery, giving and receiving, movement and stillness?
🦵 Knee Pain / Knee Stiffness
The knees allow us to bend, adapt and move forward. Symbolically, knee discomfort can invite us to look at our relationship with pride, control, stubbornness and the need to be right or remain in charge.
Where might your ego be making it difficult to bend? Where are you resisting change because yielding feels like weakness? Where could greater humility, flexibility or willingness to adapt help you move forward?
✦Vitality in Midlife Doesn’t Come From Physical Interventions Alone
From my personal experience and from what I’ve observed, I do not believe you can fully reclaim vitality in perimenopause while refusing to look honestly at the life your body is living inside.
You can eat beautifully.
You can exercise.
You can take supplements.
You can use HRT.
You can improve your sleep.
You can work with excellent practitioners.
All of those things can be valuable.
But if your life is still built around:
🧺 carrying too much
🤐 swallowing what you really feel
🔥 living under relentless pressure
🚧 having almost no boundaries
💔 staying in situations that repeatedly drain you
🏃♀️ pushing through every signal to stop
🎭 performing a version of yourself that no longer feels true
then something important is still being left untouched.
This is what I mean by soul work.
Not escaping into spirituality.
Not telling yourself illness is your fault.
Not attaching a mystical meaning to every ache.
I mean having the courage to look at your life without editing it.
What is working?
What is not?
What are you pretending not to know?
Where are you betraying your own needs?
What have you outgrown?
What are you still doing because the old version of you believed she had to?
For me, that honest review is not an optional in midlife. It is part of rebuilding health and vitality in the second half of live in perimenopause and beyond.
🧠 Habitual Thoughts Effect the Wellbeing Of Your Body
Your thoughts are not separate from your physiology.
If your inner dialogue is constantly:
“Something is wrong.”
“I can’t cope.”
“This is going to get worse.”
“My body is failing me.”
your body is repeatedly being exposed to signals of threat, pressure, and urgency.
Over time, habitual negative thinking can affect stress levels, sleep, mood, pain perception, behavior, and overall wellbeing.
That does not mean you can “think away” a medical condition.
And it does not mean every symptom was created by your mindset.
But it does mean that the mental environment you live in matters.
A body already dealing with hormonal change does not benefit from spending all day inside a stream of fear, criticism, resentment, and worst-case thinking.
This is where awareness becomes important.
Not forced positivity.
Not pretending everything is fine.
But noticing when your mind has become a machine that constantly rehearses danger.
Because repeated thoughts become repeated emotional states.
Repeated emotional states influence how you sleep, recover, move, eat, relate, and respond to stress.
And all of that affects health.
🔄 THE LOOP CAN LOOK LIKE THIS
Negative thought
↓
Stress response
↓
More tension / poorer sleep / more reactivity
↓
Symptoms feel harder to cope with
↓
More negative thoughts
The goal is not to police every thought.
It is to stop automatically believing and feeding the ones that keep your system in a constant state of alarm.
That is part of the soul work too:
What story am I repeating about myself, my body, and my life — and is that story helping me heal, adapt, and move forward?
✨ Perimenopause Is a Time for Radical Honesty
Not just curiosity.
Honesty.
Who are you now?
What are you doing because you genuinely want to?
What are you doing because you are afraid of disappointing someone?
What are you still carrying because you have always carried it?
What are you pretending does not bother you?
What are you longing for?
What have you outgrown?
What do you know deep down but keep negotiating with yourself about?
These are not fluffy spiritual questions.
They shape how you live every day.
And I do not believe we can talk seriously about vitality in the second half of life without talking about them.
Vitality is not simply:
Good bloodwork + Strong Muscles + Fewer Symptoms.
It is also:
✨ wanting to participate in your own life
✨ feeling connected to yourself
✨ having enough energy for what matters
✨ living with greater congruence between what you feel and how you live
✨ living with purpose
✨ knowing you’re headed in the right direction
That is why the deeper work matters.
🗺️You Need a Map
Without a map, you can spend years collecting fragments of yourself.
A therapist may help you understand one relationship pattern.
A personality system may explain one part of your temperament.
A health practitioner may notice one constitutional tendency.
A book may illuminate one wound.
A spiritual practice may help you recognize one repeating life theme.
And all of those can be incredibly valuable.
But you are still left trying to piece the whole picture together yourself.
